As substantiated by the site of Sanhetang discovered in archaeological work, man began to live on the land of Yuhuan early in the Neolithic Age. In West Zhou Dynasty and the Spring and Autumn Period, Yuhuan was put within the jurisdiction of Ouyue and in the Period of the Warring States it placed under the control of Chu State. In the light of the textual criticism from unearthed fishing tools, Yuhuan had rich sea culture during the Warring States Period. In the 6th year of Emperor Yong Zheng of Qing Dynasty (the year of 1728) was set up Yuhuan Department subordinate to Wenzhou Prefecture. Subsequently Yuhuan was changed into Yuhuan County in the first year of the Republic of China. In April 1962, Yuhuan was incorporated into Taizhou Prefecture (the present Taizhou City). The name of Yuhuan originates from the marvelous spectacle of island as written in the ancient records.
